Background

After Firefox OS successfully brought the web-based operating system to mobile phones. Panasonic Japan embraced the open web platform and approached Mozilla to co-develop a Smart TV product. My mission was to create a new Smart TV user interface for the co-branded product. 

My Role UX Manager

  • Led 1 UX and 2 UI designers to design a brand new generation launcher user interface for Panasonic Smart TV.

  • Set design strategy, process, and roadmap.

  • Helped UX team members to exercise design thinking methodology to realize business goals.

  • Collaborated with product and engineering teams on both Mozilla and Panasonic, Japan.

  • Coordinated design team and engineering communication to ensure UX production quality and alignment.

Times Have Changed and User Behavior Has Changed

  • People no longer use dTV mainly for watching live television programs.

  • People used TV for different purposes, such as watching movies or video streaming content in Apple TV, Roku TV, Netflix or YouTube app, mirroring device screen to TV via Chromcast, watching high resolution blue-ray movies, or playing their favorite games on Playstation or Xbox …

  • So it’s common to see many external devices are connected to TV via HDMI, DVI, RCA, AV, VGA port ..etc.

Result

  • Team Goal Achieved : Me and my team successfully designed the new user interface for Panasonic's first 4K TV product line. My Home Screen 2.0 redefined the way we watch tv a d earned very positive feedback from the market. Easy customization, simple, and fun are the most common ones.

  • Business Goal Achieved : The new launcher design was approved with very positive feedback by Panasonic Japan Headquarter TV BD head and the team. The design made its debute in 2016 CES (International Consumer Electronics Show) followed by global shipment with over 500,000 devices.
